Wine in Abruzzo is an integral part of the region’s culture and identity: it is a historical and agricultural wealth reflected in the rolling and mountainous landscapes, in wine-making traditions passed down through generations and, most importantly, in the quality of wines produced.

It is known primarily for Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, a robust and full-bodied red wine whose grape variety adapts perfectly to Abruzzo’s climate and terrain, producing wines characterised by an intense red colour, good structure and hints of ripe fruit, spices and earthy notes. Beyond Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, the region also produces other high-quality wines, including Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo, a fresh and fruity rosé wine, and white wines such as Trebbiano d’Abruzzo, Pecorino and other indigenous grape varieties.

Nowadays, thanks to quality in production and product diversity, Abruzzo wines have gained an international reputation and are appreciated by both consumers and wine industry experts.

Abruzzo grape varieties

Abruzzo wines are renowned for their variety, quality and distinctive character. Here are some of the most celebrated wines produced in this region:

Montepulciano d’Abruzzo

This is perhaps the most famous and representative wine of Abruzzo: it is made from the Montepulciano grape, a robust and versatile variety that thrives in Abruzzo’s climatic and geographical conditions. Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is often a deep ruby red colour with notes of red fruits, spices and earthy undertones. It can be enjoyed young or aged, with aged versions developing complexity and depth.

Trebbiano d’Abruzzo

Trebbiano is Abruzzo’s main white wine, a fresh and aromatic wine with notes of stone fruit, flowers and pleasant acidity. It is a versatile wine to enjoy on its own or paired with fish dishes, seafood or fresh cheeses.

Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo

Cerasuolo is a distinctive rosé wine from Abruzzo, produced mainly from the Montepulciano grape. It has an intense pink colour and offers notes of red fruits, strawberries and cherries, with lively freshness and medium body. It is an excellent accompaniment to light antipasti, fish dishes and white meat dishes.

Pecorino

Pecorino is an indigenous white grape variety from Abruzzo, characterised by notes of citrus, white flowers and aromatic herbs, with pleasant acidity and structure. Often paired with fish dishes, seafood, aged cheeses and vegetarian dishes.

Other varieties

Additionally, don’t miss the chance to try other wines such as Cococciola, a white wine characterised by notes of stone fruit, citrus and aromatic herbs, with good acidity and freshness, Passerina and Montonico, other indigenous white varieties from Abruzzo, and wines produced from Sangiovese, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, also cultivated in some parts of Abruzzo, which give us some excellent reds.

Abruzzo Wine Designations

Designations of Origin (DO) are a classification system used in the Italian wine industry to guarantee the quality and authenticity of wines produced in specific regions. In Abruzzo, there are several Designations of Origin that reflect the diversity and excellence of the region’s wine production.

The most prestigious of these is Montepulciano d’Abruzzo DOC, which applies to red wines produced mainly from the Montepulciano grape: these wines must comply with strict production rules and come from specific areas of the region.

The designation “DOCG” (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) is reserved for Montepulciano d’Abruzzo delle Colline Teramane DOCG, reserved for vineyards located in the hills around the city of Teramo, whose wine, unlike the DOC, must undergo a year of maturation in wood before being released onto the market.

The other Abruzzo DOCG is Terre Tollesi or Tullum DOCG, created in 2019. In total, Abruzzo has seven DOC designations and eight IGT.

History and production of Abruzzo wine

The history of viticulture in Abruzzo dates back to ancient times, with archaeological evidence indicating vine cultivation in the region since Roman times. However, Abruzzo viticulture has undergone various phases of development and change over the centuries.

During the medieval period, viticulture continued to flourish thanks to the presence of monasteries and religious orders that contributed to the spread and cultivation of vines. Abruzzo’s hilly and mountainous zones offered suitable terrain, and local communities developed vine cultivation and wine production techniques that became an integral part of the region’s culture and economy.

Over the following centuries, Abruzzo viticulture experienced ups and downs due to various factors, including vine diseases, wars and political changes. However, towards the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century, viticulture in Abruzzo experienced a renaissance, with greater focus on quality and commercialisation of local wines.

Today, viticulture in Abruzzo is a vital and growing industry, with an established reputation for producing high-quality wines.
