Casalbordino

Casalbordino is a town in southern Abruzzo with a remarkably ancient history – archaeological evidence shows settlements dating back to the 11th century BC when the Frentani inhabited this area. The town has always occupied a strategic position for transhumant shepherds and neighbouring villages. Like many other towns along the Adriatic coast, Casalbordino features a historic centre perched on a hilltop roughly 6 km from the shore, whilst the more modern part of town has developed along the coast, where you’ll now find a spacious, well-equipped beach.

Casalbordino’s history is particularly tied to the construction of a chapel around the 16th century following an apparition of the Virgin Mary. Over time, as pilgrim numbers grew, the Chapel was transformed into a proper Sanctuary, which was later visited and subsequently described by Gabriele D’Annunzio in his work “The Triumph of Death”. Unfortunately, during the Second World War the town suffered heavy bombing that destroyed part of the Sanctuary, which was later rebuilt.

Casalbordino Lido Beach

The Lido di Casalbordino is a sought-after seaside resort located along the scenic Costa dei Trabocchi not far from the town of Vasto. Here you’ll find a sandy beach equipped with all amenities, whilst the clear, crystalline waters have seabeds that slope gently. Only the southernmost section of the beach, closest to the mouth of the Sinello river, is characterised by small pebbles. The shoreline is bordered by a pine forest with a lovely cycle and pedestrian path that leads all the way to the Punta Aderci Nature Reserve.

What to See in Casalbordino

The Casalbordino village sits on a hilltop around 6 km from the coast and has managed to preserve its small, compact historic centre over time, complete with fortification remains. Here you can still admire the remnants of the town walls and several noble palaces such as Palazzo Magnarapa and Palazzo De Arcangelis. Worth visiting in town is the Chiesa Madre di San Salvatore, built in the 14th century though it underwent various renovation works. The building has a rectangular layout with three naves and a neoclassical façade with exposed brickwork.

Don’t miss the Sanctuary of the Madonna dei Miracoli, an important site that has been a pilgrimage destination since 1576, the year of the first Marian apparition. Initially a small Chapel was built here to commemorate the apparition, but over time it was transformed into a proper Benedictine sanctuary. Currently the interior features three naves with barrel vaults divided by square pillars with full round arches. Adjoining the Church is the monastery, which boasts a splendid portico of medieval origin. Other essential stops include a visit to the Chiesa Parrocchiale del Santissimo Salvatore and discovery of the ruins of the Abbey of Santo Stefano in Rivomaris, an ancient 6th-century abbey.

How to Get to Casalbordino

Those travelling from the north by car can take the A14 and exit at the Casalbordino-Vasto nord junction; from here you need to take the SP 216 towards Casalbordino. From Rome, take the A24 first, then the A25, and finally the A14 until the Casalbordino exit. Once there, continue on the SP216. Those coming from L’Aquila should take the Strada Statale 17 bis and subsequently the A24 and then the A14 to the Casalbordino exit.

Those wishing to reach town by public transport can use the Casalbordino-Pollutri railway station located on the Adriatic railway line. Urban and long-distance bus services connect the resort to other coastal towns such as Vasto. Casalbordino can also be reached by sea, arriving at the Port of Vasto and then travelling by car or bus to town. Finally, the nearest airport is Pescara Airport, approximately 66 km from Casalbordino.
