Along the Adriatic coast of Abruzzo between Ortona and Lanciano lies the charming town of San Vito Chietino, a destination that draws visitors not only for its stunning beaches but also for its rich historical heritage. San Vito Chietino is often considered an excellent base for exploring this corner of Abruzzo, as its position between the sea and the hills makes it the ideal place to discover both the Costa dei Trabocchi and the Abruzzo hinterland.

Like other towns along the Abruzzo coast, San Vito comprises a historic centre perched atop a hill at approximately 122 metres above sea level, and a “lower section” known as Marina di San Vito, which stretches across flat terrain along the Adriatic coast. Towards the end of the 19th century, the town was also visited by Gabriele D’Annunzio, who spent an extended stay in a house on a promontory now known as the “Eremo Dannunziano”.

The town unfortunately suffered severe bombardment during both the First and Second World Wars, and it was only in the 1960s that San Vito began to emerge as a tourist destination, boosted by the development of motorway connections.

However, San Vito Chietino itself has several interesting sites worth discovering. The historic core of San Vito Chietino sits on a hilltop offering beautiful panoramic views across the surrounding area, and it also preserves sites of considerable interest. In particular, you can visit the castle ruins, which were built alongside the Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere at Fossacesia. Sadly, the fortress was almost entirely destroyed in the 19th century during urban expansion works.

Other notable sites include Palazzo Tosti in Piazza Garibaldi, dating from the 18th century, and Palazzo Renzetti. Among the religious buildings worth visiting are the Church of San Francesco da Paola, located by the Marconi viewpoint, and the Church of the Immaculate Conception and San Vito Martire, dating from the second half of the 19th century.

In the Portelle locality stands the Eremo Dannunziano, a rural house that hosted Italian poet Gabriele D’Annunzio in the summer of 1889 with his friend Barbara Leoni. The house sits on a promontory overlooking the Adriatic, and along the coast you’ll find the Trabocco Turchino, which D’Annunzio also described in his work “The Triumph of Death”.

Cycling enthusiasts can enjoy a beautiful route that takes you to Ortona along a cycle path running right along the coast. San Vito Chietino is also part of the so-called “Costa dei Trabocchi”, the stretch of coast extending roughly 40 km from Ortona to Vasto, featuring numerous traditional fishing structures and stunning landscapes.
