Charming village in the province of L’Aquila, Anversa degli Abruzzi is the ideal destination for those seeking to combine cultural exploration with natural beauty. Listed among Italy’s “Most Beautiful Villages,” Anversa is a genuine gem within the Comunità montana Peligna and is home to the Gole del Sagittario guided nature reserve.

The numerous necropolises discovered here testify to the village’s ancient origins, with evidence suggesting settlement dating back to the Bronze Age. The town was first conquered by the Normans, who built a fortress here, then by the Aragonese, and finally by the Di Sangro family, who ruled Anversa degli Abruzzi until the 1800s. Unfortunately, the area suffered multiple earthquakes in the early twentieth century, which devastated much of the historic centre.

Throughout the twentieth century, Anversa became a favourite haunt for writers and artists who found inspiration in the town’s natural landscapes and rich history. Poet Gabriele D’Annunzio, captivated by the breathtaking vistas and the story of the Di Sangro family, set his tragedy “La Fiaccola sotto il moggio” here. This literary connection has earned Anversa degli Abruzzi a place in the “I Parchi Letterari” circuit.

Things to do in Anversa degli Abruzzi

Anversa degli Abruzzi is one of the most characteristic and evocative villages in Abruzzo. Like other Abruzzo towns, Anversa comprises two distinct areas: the upper town, home to the remains of the Norman Castle, and the lower section, characterised by a labyrinth of narrow alleyways best explored on foot. As you wander through this beautiful village, you’ll discover breathtaking viewpoints and charming boutiques selling local food, wine and crafts.

Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie

1Via Santa Maria delle Grazie, 24, 67030 Anversa degli Abruzzi AQ, Italy

The Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie stands in Piazza Roma and dates from the sixteenth century. Inside, three aisles separated by stone columns house a 1530 statue of San Rocco and an intricately carved and gilded wooden tabernacle. Externally, the building is quite simple, with a sixteenth-century portal enhanced by a limestone frame with relief carvings, topped by a rose window bearing the coat of arms of the Di Sangro family and that of Anversa.

The “Lombardi” District

In the fifteenth century, a severe earthquake struck the area, prompting numerous master craftsmen from Lombardy to migrate here for reconstruction work. The “Lombardi” Houses were built between 1480 and 1520 by artisans from northern Italy who had immigrated to Abruzzo during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries to help rebuild the region.

Many of these buildings recall Alpine dwellings, particularly with their gafii—the characteristic balconies typical of Longobard architecture. One private residence in this district has preserved a portal adorned with ornaments and symbolic figures relating to the cult of San Domenico, including serpents, fish, swords and mule irons.

Norman Castle

2Castello Normanno, Via al Palazzo, 67030 Anversa degli Abruzzi AQ, Italy

Built by the Normans in the twelfth century, the castle served to control access from the Peligna Valley. After Norman rule, the fortress came under the ownership of the Di Sangro family and the Belprato family, who transformed it into a centre for intellectuals and artists. Today, only fragments of the original castle remain, including the pentagonal tower and a post-Renaissance garden, as an eighteenth-century earthquake destroyed much of the complex.

In the twentieth century, the castle inspired poet Gabriele d’Annunzio, who set his 1905 work “La fiaccola sotto il moggio” here—a tale depicting the decline of the noble Di Sangro family during the reign of Ferdinand I of Bourbon.

Porta Pazziana

3Largo di Porta Pazziana, 67030 Anversa degli Abruzzi AQ, Italy

Porta Pazziana is one of two gates from Anversa’s city walls that have survived to the present day. Built around the mid-fourteenth century, Porta Pazziana is considered the town’s most important entrance, facing east towards Sulmona.

The original defensive walls were characterised by a series of fortified houses interspersed with crenellated watchtowers and entrance gates. Today, the gate displays Renaissance styling with a simple rounded arch. To the west, towards Scanno, stood Porta San Nicola, used during the Renaissance for the passage of flocks.

Church of San Marcello

4Corso Raynaldo D'Anversa, 21, 67030 Anversa degli Abruzzi AQ, Italy

The Church of San Marcello is considered the town’s oldest church and is also among its best-preserved, despite undergoing several restoration campaigns over the centuries. Built around the eleventh century and dedicated to the town’s patron saint, it features a façade with a Gothic portal created in the mid-fifteenth century by Count Nicolò di Procida. The interior has been substantially altered and once displayed finely frescoed walls.

Castrovalva

Situated at 820 metres above sea level, Castrovalva perches on a rocky outcrop and is Anversa’s oldest—and only—hamlet. As the town’s ancient nucleus, Castrovalva preserves buildings of considerable historical significance, including the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, the sixteenth-century Church of Santa Maria della Neve, and the small twelfth-century Church of San Michele Arcangelo, built on Mount Sant’Angelo.

Gole del Sagittario Regional Nature Reserve

667030 Anversa degli Abruzzi, Province of L'Aquila, Italy

To experience an immersive natural adventure, explore the Gole del Sagittario, which offers truly spectacular scenery. The reserve extends across approximately 400 hectares and features limestone canyons carved by the Sagittario River.

This habitat supports numerous plant and animal species, including wolves, hawks, dormice, owls and Marsican bears. Beyond offering numerous trails for hiking and walking, the area also features an important botanical garden, museum and picnic facilities.
