Campo Felice

Located between the municipalities of Lucoli and Rocca di Cambio, Campo Felice is a karst plateau in the Apennines of Abruzzo which, thanks to its well-known winter sports resort, attracts many winter sports enthusiasts during the colder months.

Campo Felice is one of central Italy’s most renowned ski destinations, offering a variety of winter recreational activities and easy accessibility from Rome and other towns in the region. Positioned on the slopes of the Velino massif, the Campo Felice ski resort opened in the 1970s and has since experienced rapid development, now forming part of the Tre Nevi ski area alongside Ovindoli-Monte Magnola and Campo Imperatore.

The Campo Felice winter sports resort is surrounded by peaks over two thousand metres high, snow-capped for most of the winter season. Thanks to its location, it’s one of the few ski resorts that allows you to descend both sides of the mountain on skis: on one side the Campo Felice slopes with the Altipiano delle Rocche plateau, and on the other Rocca di Mezzo.

This resort is ideal for those who enjoy alpine skiing, cross-country skiing and snowboarding. Campo Felice also features several cross-country skiing trails, areas where beginners can learn more easily such as the “Manovia Baby” and the “Brecciara” practice carpet.

With 24 runs of varying difficulty levels extending for approximately 40 km, a snowpark and a “Fun Kids Area” where children can enjoy themselves safely, Campo Felice is one of the most popular winter destinations for tourists from central and southern Italy.

The resort boasts cutting-edge lift systems starting at 1,400 metres and reaching a maximum altitude of 2,064 metres, as well as an advanced snowmaking system equipped with over 300 cannons capable of covering all runs even during periods of low natural snowfall.

Within Campo Felice ski resort there are also eight refreshment points including restaurants, snack bars, chalets and sandwich shops, such as Chalet Campo Felice, Chalet del Bosco and La Capannina, where skiers can find warmth and good food.

Ski Passes for Campo Felice

Campo Felice ski resort offers various ski pass options, including daily, multi-day and seasonal passes. You can also purchase online or recharge the My Campo Felice KEY card via the website. Alternatively, ski passes are available at ticket offices and shops in L’Aquila, Rocca di Cambio, Rocca di Mezzo and Rome.

There’s also the “Skipass dei Parchi” seasonal pass, which allows you to ski at Campo Felice, Ovindoli – Monte Magnola and Gran Sasso d’Italia, and the “Skipass Due Nevi” which covers Campo Felice and Gran Sasso d’Italia.

What to Do in Summer at Campo Felice

Campo Felice is an ideal destination also in summer, especially for those who love being surrounded by greenery and nature, as it’s possible to go hiking and horse riding. The plateau and surrounding peaks around Campo Felice also allow visitors to fully experience these areas during the summer season thanks to the lifts that take visitors and hikers up to higher altitudes where you’ll find numerous trails of varying levels and difficulty.

In particular, the chairlift reaches Chalet del Bosco, from where a path leads to the summit of Monte Rotondo at 2,064 metres and other excursions to nearby peaks. On the Brecciara chairlift side there’s also a Bike Park with various trails and a Bike Point Assistance where you can hire bikes, protective gear and all necessary equipment.

Campo Felice falls mostly within the municipality of Lucoli and partially in Rocca di Cambio. These two locations, together with the town of Rocca di Mezzo, are excellent bases for finding accommodation. The ski resort is located in Rocca di Cambio, making it the best place to find lodging to reach the lifts easily.

Getting to Campo Felice

Campo Felice is easily accessible by car from the main cities of central Italy. For those coming from Rome, take the A24 motorway towards L’Aquila and exit at Tornimparte, then follow the S.S. 696 towards Campo Felice.

From L’Aquila, take the A24 towards Rome-Pescara and exit at Tornimparte, then follow the S.S. 696. If you’re coming from Naples, take the A1 then the A3 to Cassino station; from there continue on the SR509 until you join the A24 and exit at Tornimparte.

Rocca di Mezzo is served by bus services from the Abruzzo transport company TUA to various towns including L’Aquila and Avezzano. Bus connections to Rome are available through GoGoBus, which organises day-trip ski packages to Campo Felice. In winter, GoGoBus offers packages that include return bus fare and a ski pass.
