From the centre of Caramanico Terme, numerous trails set out to explore the stunning Orfento Valley, which winds from the slopes of Majella up to 2,000 metres in altitude.
In the 1970s, this territory of approximately 2,606 hectares became a State Nature Reserve, and today its flora is remarkably varied. At lower elevations you’ll find oak and beech trees, whilst above 1,800-1,900 metres you’ll encounter mountain pine, and at greater heights the Apennine edelweiss and tiny soldanella are visible. Among the animal species you may encounter wild boar, badgers, foxes, stone martens, roe deer, red deer, golden eagles, goshawks and tawny owls.
The area is rich in trails of varying length and difficulty, ideal for trekking and hiking through spectacular canyons, woodlands and watercourses, where you can spend peaceful days surrounded by nature and admire stunning landscapes. Visits can be made independently by following the signposted routes or with local guides.

To access the trails in the Orfento Valley, you need to register free of charge at the Caramanico Terme Visitor Centre. The Visitor Centre is open every day of the year from 9am to 1pm, in summer (15 June to 15 September) also in the afternoon from 3pm to 7pm, and from 20 July to 20 August it operates continuously from 8am to 7pm. Closed on Christmas Day. However, you can visit the Orfento Valley and its trails at any time without restrictions.
The Sentiero delle Scalelle is a pleasant hike suitable for all abilities, departing from Caramanico Visitor Centre and arriving at Ponte di Caramanico, crossing the deep gorge carved by the river over millions of years. The trail follows the course of the Orfento river, and along the way you cross its banks several times via wooden bridges and walkways.
An alternation of ups and downs leads to a waterfall that was artificially created to channel the river water, then continues to a staircase leading to the Ponte di Caramanico on the S.S. 487 road. You walk almost entirely immersed in the forest and often surrounded by ferns. The trail is approximately 4 km long with a height gain of 120 metres.
This magnificent loop trail departs from the hamlet of Santa Croce di Caramanico Terme, reaches the Ponte di Caramanico and then continues until you return to the starting point. From Santa Croce you take a trail that first crosses several cultivated fields before entering a dense conifer forest.
The second part of the route is truly spectacular as it allows you to reach a breathtaking gorge carved by the river whilst surrounded by thick woodland. Wooden bridges allow you to cross the Orfento river multiple times until you reach Ponte di Caramanico; from there the route continues on asphalt for approximately 2 km until you return to Santa Croce. The itinerary is about 8 km long with a height gain of 180 metres.
This itinerary also departs from the hamlet of Santa Croce di Caramanico Terme and after crossing cultivated fields and a dense conifer forest, proceeds towards Ponte San Benedetto. At one point you need to navigate a short rock section equipped with a steel cable, before finding yourself immersed in beech forest until you reach Ponte della Pietra (1,000 metres). After the bridge, you proceed on the Sentiero dello Spirito (S) towards Caramanico Terme.
At this point in the route, a brief detour is recommended to visit the Sant’Onofrio Hermitage at Orfento, of which only part of the frescoed portal, a section of roof still embedded in the rock and remains of the bell tower remain today. After your visit you can return to trail S and follow path B2 then B6 to return to Santa Croce. The route is approximately 16 km long with a height gain of 400 metres.
This itinerary starts from Decontra, a hamlet of Caramanico Terme that is particularly charming for its orderly stone houses. From here you can take trail B1 which first winds through secondary meadows and then enters beech forest until you reach the start of the Sentiero dello Spirito, which leads to the San Giovanni Hermitage. Situated at 1,227 metres altitude, San Giovanni Hermitage is considered one of Abruzzo’s most impressive, having been entirely carved from the rock.
Painstaking work allowed not only the internal rooms of the hermitage to emerge from the stone but also an ingenious system of channels for collecting rainwater. The hermitage is famous for having housed Fra Pietro da Morrone, who later became Pope Celestine V. This hike presents approximately 700 metres of height gain and is more challenging than the previous routes, so it’s recommended only for experienced walkers. However, this itinerary is undoubtedly an experience that rewards you with magnificent scenery.
Starting from Santa Croce di Caramanico, take trail B2 until you reach a stunning rock fissure known as the “Guado della Vena”; from here you continue on path B2 crossing several bridges including Ponte del Vallone and Ponte di San Benedetto.
After crossing a section equipped with a steel cable, you walk through dense beech forest leading first to Ponte della Pietra and then to Guado Sant’Antonio at 1,220 metres. From here you continue along trail B2 which winds through a valley surrounded by a hill known as Colle della Ciocca, a nesting site for a pair of golden eagles. From there you proceed first following path B2 then B7 towards Fonte Viola. This itinerary has a height gain of 700 metres and an estimated walking time of around 8 hours.
The Decontra Loop is a trail of around 11 km with a height gain of 400 metres that offers magnificent views over the entire valley. Starting again from Santa Croce di Caramanico Terme, you reach Ponte del Vallone where you proceed on path B2, then take trail B8 which climbs towards the hamlet of Decontra.
The panoramas on this route are stunning, ranging from the Orfento Valley to the peaks of the Majella massif. Upon reaching Decontra, a small hamlet of Caramanico Terme, you can admire the houses built with stone carefully squared by skilled local stonemasons and walk through the streets of this charming Abruzzese village.

The nearest village for visiting the Orfento Valley is Caramanico Terme, so we recommend staying there if you plan to set off on a hike early in the morning.
