Situated along the northernmost coastline of the Abruzzo region, Alba Adriatica is a charming and vibrant seaside town with a sandy beach stretching nearly 3 km, caressed by crystal-clear waters with gentle slopes.

Alba Adriatica is actually a relatively young town – before becoming a municipality in 1956, it was simply a district of the neighbouring town of Tortoreto. Since then, Alba has experienced continuous growth and has developed into one of the region’s leading beach resorts.

The town is nestled within the Val Vibrata, where picturesque green hills hide charming historic villages. Alba’s centre captivates visitors with its numerous 18th-century villas, including Villa Chiarugi, Villa Gianluca Palma and Villa Zanoni, and its beautiful seafront promenade named after Guglielmo Marconi, which is crossed by the cycle path known as the “Adriatic Green Corridor”.

Considered one of the “Seven Sisters of Abruzzo” – seven coastal destinations celebrated for their stunning beaches – Alba Adriatica is a highly sought-after summer destination, renowned not only for its beautiful coastline and clear waters but also for the excellent quality and variety of facilities on offer.

Alba Adriatica’s beach

Alba Adriatica’s beach is also known as the Silver Beach because of the shimmering silvery tone the sand takes on in the sunlight. Here, stretches of free beach alternate with well-equipped establishments offering full facilities, whilst the sea waters are crystal-clear with gently sloping seabeds that have repeatedly earned the Blue Flag award. Numerous beach clubs line the coast, providing dining, entertainment and equipment hire such as pedaloes and inflatable slides, as well as umbrellas and sun loungers.

The seafront promenade, developed in the 1950s, features a beautiful monumental fountain called the “Nilo Fountain” and is characterised by three pine groves, where visitors can shelter from the sun on the hottest days. The area also has children’s play areas and picnic tables.

Though Alba has only really developed as a tourist destination over the past fifty years, it has become an extremely popular summer spot with visitors from all over Italy. The sandy beach and family-friendly facilities make it particularly appealing to families with children, whilst the range of sports facilities and entertainment venues also attract younger visitors.

Things to do in Alba Adriatica

Despite its recent history, Alba Adriatica boasts an interesting cultural heritage. Among the must-see sights is the Torre della Vibrata, a watchtower built in 1568 during the reign of Charles V of Spain to watch for Saracen attacks. This solid brick structure, with its distinctive square footprint, takes its name from the Vibrata torrent, whose mouth sits right beside the tower. The building has recently been restored and converted into a restaurant.

Other notable attractions include the numerous 18th-century villas. The stunning Villa Flajani, once the home of the noble Flajani family and now the municipal library, and Villa Chiarugi, built in 1720 by architect Rolli, showcase neoclassical style with rectangular proportions and classical statuary. Also worth visiting is Villa Gianluca Palma, considered one of Alba Adriatica’s finest and oldest residences, surrounded by gardens filled with palm trees, conifers and diverse vegetation.

Alba is also perfect for cycling enthusiasts, as it’s on the route of the “Adriatic Green Corridor” cycle path, which runs along the entire Guglielmo Marconi seafront, offering bridges, trees, scenic views and beautiful landscapes. Venture inland to discover charming villages such as Colonnella, Controguerra and Corropoli, nestled in the Val Vibrata and surrounded by olive groves and vineyards.
