Also known as the “First Beach of Abruzzo”, Martinsicuro is a town located in the northernmost part of the Abruzzese coast and is renowned as a modern seaside resort. Nestled between the Adriatic coast and the Val Vibrata, Martinsicuro is a town with a genuinely ancient history, as evidenced by the numerous artefacts discovered during excavations carried out in the 1990s.

Today the town attracts visitors not only for its stunning shoreline but also thanks to its historical, architectural and natural heritage. Martinsicuro, in fact, overlooks the Adriatic Sea on one side whilst on the other it is surrounded by gently rolling green hills that host small villages rich in history and charm.

Like many coastal locations, Martinsicuro is divided into two areas: an inland zone that houses the oldest centre and the Villa Rosa district, situated along the coast, where you’ll find a beach that is very popular during the summer season.

Martinsicuro Beach

The Abruzzo coastline boasts splendid beaches and wonderfully crystal-clear waters. In particular, the northernmost stretch of the region’s coast is home to the so-called “Seven Sisters of Abruzzo”, that is, seven seaside resorts distinguished by the beauty of their sandy shores. The seaside village of Martinsicuro is one of these seven dream beaches.

In the Villa Rosa district you’ll find the main lido of the town, where a soft sandy beach is washed by crystal-clear waters that have repeatedly earned the Blue Flag award. Martinsicuro’s coastline features both free beach areas and equipped zones with beach establishments that provide all services, whilst the sea has gently sloping seabeds. The seafront is surrounded by palm trees and is home to shops, bars, kiosks and a biotope that includes dunes and vegetation of considerable interest.

Martinsicuro is a destination that, from a tourism perspective, has developed only in the last fifty years but which now presents itself as a highly sought-after summer destination. In particular, the beach’s characteristics, excellent accommodation facilities and services offered have made Martinsicuro a favourite choice for families with children.

What to See in Martinsicuro

Located in the Val Vibrata territory, once known as the Valley of Eden, Martinsicuro is a town that has managed to preserve part of its historical heritage. The symbol of the town is the Tower of Charles V, a watchtower built in the mid-16th century at the behest of King Charles V for the purpose of defending against Saracen raids. The construction work was overseen by the nobleman Martin De Segura, who would later give the town its current name, Martinsicuro. Over time, the entire settlement developed around this structure.

Charles V’s tower currently houses the Antiquarium of Castrum Truentinum, which is a museum that preserves artefacts found during excavations carried out in the Colle Marzio area. The remains on display cover a fairly broad period ranging from prehistoric times, through the Late Bronze Age, to the Lombard period.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish Church dates back to the 20th century and is the town’s most important religious building. The church has a Latin cross layout, features an elegant portico and inside houses a painting by Giuseppe Pauri. Directly opposite the church stands “Villa Bernabei”, an elegant mid-19th-century palace. For those who enjoy outdoor excursions, you can explore a section of the route known as the Green Adriatic Corridor, a cycle path that runs along the Adriatic Riviera and offers marvellous views.
