Regarded as one of Abruzzo’s most celebrated seaside resorts thanks to its water quality, Pineto sits nestled within lush pine groves and the sparkling blue waters of the Adriatic. The town takes its name from the abundance of pine trees planted in the early 1900s by the Filiani family of Atri, who at the time owned Villa Filiani. This villa was among the first structures built along Pineto’s coastline in the early 1800s, as the town’s centre was originally located inland.

Following a development plan created by Luigi Filiani, 2,000 Pinus Pinaea trees were planted, later joined by other species such as holm oaks and laurels. The town was initially called Villa Filiani (a hamlet of Mutignano municipality) before being renamed Pineto in the early 1930s, inspired by Gabriele D’Annunzio’s celebrated poem “La pioggia nel Pineto“. Over time, the Foggetta pine grove was added, creating more than 3 km of greenery stretching from the mouth of the Calvano stream to the base of Cerrano Tower.

Pineto is frequently cited as one of Italy’s most enchanting coastal stretches, home to stunning beaches and breathtaking views, enhanced by the Cerrano Tower Marine Protected Area, which provides habitat for several rare bird species nesting in the dunes between beach and pinewood. Surrounded by verdant hills, this resort town is renowned for its crystalline waters and excellent facilities, having been awarded both Blue Flag and Green Flag status on multiple occasions.

Pineto’s Beach

The Pineto shoreline is composed of fine golden sand and has repeatedly featured in lists of Italy’s most beautiful beaches. The sea waters are crystal clear and characterised by shallow seabeds that slope gradually—a feature particularly appealing to families with children. The beaches are well-equipped with facilities and offer various activities and sports suited to young people and families alike.

Pineto’s beach is a place for entertainment, relaxation and sport. Here you can stroll the entire seafront promenade to Cerrano Tower whilst taking in spectacular views of the Abruzzo coast. The area also boasts excellent sports centres with tennis, five-a-side football and basketball courts, plus one of Italy’s largest roller-skating rinks, which hosts national and international competitions.

What to See in Pineto

The striking Cerrano Tower

Pineto’s oldest section dates to the medieval period and is the hamlet of Mutignano, situated at 321 metres altitude and once the town’s civic centre. Beyond enjoying magnificent views across the entire coast, you can visit the Church of San Silvestro, distinguished by its unusual entrance set beneath the bell tower in a style reminiscent of Arab mosques. Inside, the church houses significant artworks including a Crucifix by Nicola da Guardiagrele, a wooden statue of Sant’Ilario Martire and a 15th-century triptych by Andrea De Litio.

The city’s emblem is undoubtedly the Cerrano Tower, situated about two kilometres from the centre on the border with Silvi Marina. The tower forms part of a defensive system of numerous fortifications built during the Kingdom of Naples to protect the coast from Saracen pirate raids. Dating to the 16th century, it features a massive square base that now houses the headquarters of the Cerrano Tower Marine Protected Area. Along the coast before the tower lie remains of Atri’s ancient harbour and numerous archaeological finds.

Cycling enthusiasts can try the seafront cycle path linking Pineto with the Scerne hamlet, hugging the coastline through unspoilt terrain and offering spectacular landscapes. Nature lovers can explore Parco Filiani, a true sanctuary of peace and tranquillity. The park, established in 1930 on the site of a former clay pit, now features woodland and a botanical garden hosting diverse tree and plant species including hawthorns, holm oaks, gorse, laurels and downy oaks.

Since 2016, a wonderful adventure park has operated within the grounds, offering trails of varying difficulty levels where both adults and children can enjoy skill-based courses set amongst the woodland.
