Called the “pearl of the Adriatic” by Gabriele D’Annunzio, Silvi Marina is a coastal resort in Abruzzo, located in the province of Teramo. The town sits nestled between the stunning beaches of the Adriatic coast and the hills of Città Sant’Angelo. The name Silvi appears to derive from the abundant woodlands and lush vegetation that characterise the area, with some linking it to Silvanus, the Roman deity who protected forests and countryside.
Silvi has ancient origins and was already considered a strategic port city during the Romanesque period. Over time, however, invasions and attacks by hostile populations forced inhabitants to abandon the seafront and build settlements in the surrounding hills, which offered better protection. Today, the town has a medieval old town located in the hillside area, known as Silvi Alta, and a lower, more recently developed section called Silvi Marina. The seafront area was revived in the nineteenth century by numerous fishermen who decided to settle closer to the coast, paving the way for Silvi Marina’s tourist development.
Today, Silvi Marina’s popularity stems from its beautiful beach, which is washed by crystal-clear waters and boasts excellent facilities that attract families and groups of young people every year seeking a lively seaside destination.
Silvi’s beach, along with Martinsicuro, Alba Adriatica, Tortoreto Lido, Giulianova, Roseto degli Abruzzi and Pineto, makes up what are known as the Seven Sisters – seven pearls of the Adriatic coast that are recognised as renowned seaside destinations.
Silvi Marina is particularly one of the most sought-after stretches of coastline in the entire Abruzzo region, as the beach features fine, soft sand and crystal-clear waters that often evoke distant, exotic locations. Its waters have been awarded the Blue Flag on multiple occasions. The clear, shallow water near the shore, clean sand, play areas, family facilities and numerous bars and restaurants are all characteristics that have also earned Silvi Marina the Green Flag award.
The Silvi coastline extends for approximately 6 km, predominantly sandy, though it also features several free beaches. A notable feature of this stretch of coast is the absence of piers or cliffs, which allows swimming in a truly unspoilt and special environment. The seafront also offers numerous spaces for various sports activities: from tennis to windsurfing, from spear fishing to beach volleyball, every visitor can find an activity suited to their needs.
Thanks to its excellent accommodation facilities and services, Silvi Marina is the ideal destination for a pleasant seaside holiday of a week or more. Less famous than the beaches of Emilia-Romagna or Salento, Silvi Marina is a resort that truly has much to offer and knows how to captivate every type of visitor.
For this reason, whatever type of accommodation you choose, we recommend booking in advance to ensure you find the one that best suits your needs.
Those coming to Silvi Marina for the beaches can choose to stay in one of the beautiful hotels located right in the seafront area. Equipped with all comforts and services, Silvi Marina’s hotels are the ideal place to spend your holiday in complete relaxation, with options available for both full board and half board.
If you decide to stay in Silvi Marina for shorter or longer periods, you might consider renting an apartment or holiday home, perhaps in a residence, which often offer more competitive prices compared to hotels. This type of accommodation not only provides greater privacy but also more spacious areas compared to a hotel room. Apartments and houses also come equipped with a kitchen, allowing greater independence in preparing and managing meals.

The mild climate that characterises Silvi throughout the year makes it a perfect destination not only in summer but also in other seasons. Silvi Alta, the oldest part of the village, sits on a hilltop 243 metres above sea level and offers all visitors a splendid panorama of the Gran Sasso. Within the ancient old town stands the Church of San Salvatore, which was built around the eleventh century but houses frescoes dating from the twelfth century and features a bell tower from the 1700s. Not far from this building is also the Church of San Rocco, built in the sixteenth century but renovated during the nineteenth century.
Between Silvi Marina and Pineto are both the Ancient Port of Adria and the Cerrano Tower. The Port, which held strategic importance even in Roman times, now presents itself as a site rich in archaeological finds. The Cerrano Tower, by contrast, marks the seaside boundary of Silvi Marina and was built in the sixteenth century to defend the Duchy of Acquaviva from pirate attacks.
Silvi Marina is also an ideal base from which to explore the Abruzzo hinterland, as well as to visit other nearby coastal towns such as Pineto and Pescara.
Silvi Marina is a seaside resort much sought after not only by families but also by young people looking for sea and entertainment. The area features numerous restaurants and bars, particularly in the seafront area, offering excellent aperitifs, cocktails and delicious local cuisine dishes. From late afternoon until the early hours, Silvi Marina offers pubs, bars and nightclubs where those seeking nightlife can spend their time enjoying entertainment and relaxation.
In mid-July, the exhibition of traditional arts and crafts is also organised in the Silvi Alta area, where the entire town works to recreate Silvi as it was in medieval times. With workshops showcasing traditional crafts, food stalls where you can taste local products and numerous shows (such as donkey racing or sack racing), Silvi transforms into a completely different town and takes every visitor on a wonderful journey back in time.
