A charming town in the Val Vibrata, Tortoreto is a coastal resort on the Adriatic that is known as one of Abruzzo’s most popular seaside destinations. Until the 1950s, the town was a single municipality with Alba Adriatica, which only separated from Tortoreto’s territory in 1956 to become an independent town.

Like most Abruzzese coastal towns, Tortoreto is divided into two distinct areas: Tortoreto Alta, situated on a hilltop where the historic town centre is located, and Tortoreto Lido, where you’ll find long, sandy beaches that are bustling during the summer season. These two sides of Tortoreto allow you to plan a stay that encompasses both seaside relaxation and the town’s rich historical and architectural heritage.

Although Roman remains have been discovered in the town, Tortoreto developed particularly towards the end of the 6th century thanks to the establishment of a small settlement that laid the foundations for the historic centre as we see it today. Over the centuries, the village was fortified with a castle, defensive walls and watchtowers.

It wasn’t until the 19th century that the first settlements began to emerge along the flatter terrain closer to the sea, and in the 1960s this coastal stretch began to develop as a tourist destination with the construction of hotels, facilities and extensive green spaces.

The town is surrounded by lush green hills that slope gently down to the sea, where a long stretch of pristine shoreline awaits. Residential and peaceful, Tortoreto is a destination that welcomes visitors every summer not only from across Italy but increasingly from abroad as well.

Tortoreto Lido Beach

Tortoreto Lido1 boasts over three kilometres of beach characterised by wide stretches of fine, soft sand. The sea water has repeatedly won the European Blue Flag award for its cleanliness. Free beaches alternate with equipped facilities offering every service imaginable, making them ideal for families with children.

The seafront promenade is surrounded by numerous green spaces filled with flowers, plants and trees, providing the perfect spot to escape the heat during those warm summer days.

This area also features a long pedestrian and cycle path that stretches across the entire municipality, connecting Tortoreto to the north with Alba Adriatica and to the south with Giulianova. We recommend taking this route at sunset when you can enjoy spectacular views of the Adriatic coast.

What to See in Tortoreto Alta

The village of Tortoreto Alta

The historic heart of Tortoreto Alta sits on a hilltop 240 metres above sea level, offering stunning panoramic views across the surrounding countryside. This region has long been characterised not only by woodland but also by turtle doves’ nesting grounds, the characteristic that gave Tortoreto its name.

The historic centre is divided into three zones – Terra-vecchia, Terranova and the Borgo – and has retained its medieval village structure over the centuries, with a central fortress surrounded by high defensive walls topped by the splendid Clock Tower that still stands today.

The Clock Tower3 was constructed in several phases: the base, made of stone and brick, appears to date from the 7th century; the central section dates from the medieval period (you can still see traces of the drawbridge supports), whilst the upper part dates from the 19th century and features Gothic arches and a clock face.

An architectural jewel of Tortoreto Alta is undoubtedly the Church of Misericordia4, built in 1348 as a thanksgiving to the Madonna for protecting the town from the terrible plague that ravaged Italy. Today, you can still admire a series of Renaissance works completed by Giacomo Bonfini inside the church.

Among other notable sites in this part of town is the Church of Sant'Agostino5, a religious building constructed in baroque style with a single nave, barrel vault and altars adorned with stucco ornaments.

At Tortoreto Alta, you can also enjoy magnificent views from the belvedere of the Fortress6, a terrace that once served as a military lookout point overlooking the entire coast. Today, it offers panoramic vistas stretching from the Tronto River to the Tordino River.

For history and archaeology enthusiasts, a visit to the remains of the elegant Villa Romana Le Muracche7 is a must, located among vineyards and olive groves between Tortoreto Lido and Tortoreto Alta. The building appears to date from the 2nd century BC and contained objects used in wine production.

Evening Activities in Tortoreto

Nightlife in Tortoreto isn’t as developed as in larger towns, but it’s well-organised and offers plenty of entertainment options. The seafront promenade is undoubtedly where you’ll find the majority of restaurants, bars and shops for an evening out.

Particularly in summer, the town comes alive with piazza festivals and fairs. The most famous event is undoubtedly the Palio del Barone, held each August, a historical re-enactment of the 13th-century wedding between two members of noble families, Roberto di Tortoreto and Forastaria di Brunfonte. During these days, medieval games, banquets and processions in period costumes recreate the atmosphere of the era.

In July, the town hosts the “Festival of Local Products” and the “Clam Festival”, two important gastronomic events that draw visitors from neighbouring areas.

During the day Tortoreto’s beaches are places of leisure and relaxation, but from late afternoon they host venues organising enchanting beach aperitivos and events that can continue late into the night.
